Neurotransmitters are chemicals that send signals between neurons and other cells. The major neurotransmitters are:

  • Norepinephrine affects arousal

  • Dopamine affects:
    • motor system
    • Corticospinal tract is a collection of nerve fibers that travel between the cerebral cortex of the brain and the spinal chord
    • Extrapyramidial system affect the
    • coordination of movement
    • cognition (the way we process information)
    • endocrines (regulates metabolism, growth & development, tissue function, and mood)
    • and nausea
  • Serotonin affects social tolerance, mood, satiety (being full or gratified beyond satisfaction), body temperature and sleep, while decreasing pain

  • Cholinergic system affects learning, short term memory, arousal

Neurons are electrically excitable cells in the nervous system that process and transmit information. They are the core components of the brain, spinal chord, ventral nerve chord (nervous system) and peripheral nerves.
